WORKING WITH OUT OF STATE RESCUES
SouthBARK has teamed up with rescue groups in parts of the country where spay and neuter programs have been effective, and therefore the supply of adoptable pets is substantially lower. If there is one thing we have a lot of in the south, it is wonderful animals that need homes!
The process is fairly simple: we take pictures of the dogs and cats that have been in the kill shelters for a few weeks and are marked as “urgent”, and send them to our rescue contacts (generally in the north and mid-west.) Hundreds of rescues sort through the pictures and when they see a pup (or kitty) that they are confident they can find a loving home for, they let us know and we immediately take the pet from the shelter, get it seen by a vet, arrange for a foster home for a few days, and then put on a transport to the rescue which leaves once every week or every other week (usually a big van driven by a volunteer.) Sometimes the rescues are so desperate for cute puppies they already have approved adopters waiting in the wings for the perfect pet to come along, and we certainly have provided them with some great ones.
We are always in need of folks that can help us with sponsoring a pet (helping us pay for their initial vetting), giving a pet a short term foster home, or even perhaps helping us drive them north. Please let us know if you are interested in helping, and thank you for your continued support!
By sending 20-30 dogs a week from kill shelters down here, we are greatly changing the euthanasia statistics of our shelters. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish with the help of our friends up north. However, we very much look forward to the day when we have no more wonderful dogs to send!
